Andrea’s Client Success!
Book design work by Andrea Schmidt. Beyond designing gorgeous books that win awards, Andrea works harmoniously with the entire publishing team to make sure that the book makes it past the finish line (for sale)! Publishing a book is a significant accomplishment!
In many cases, Andrea was the project manager as well as the book designer, responsible for: communicating closely with clients, research, developing concepts and creating mockups, incorporating feedback, making changes until the client was incredibly happy, following up with the final files and (in some cases) uploading files and/or communicating with the printer to ensure a happy result!
Andrea’s packages include varying levels of self-publishing coaching and guidance, as required.
Lauren Folloni suffered for years with an undiagnosed illness in which she could hear her eyeballs moving. This is her brave story.
A modern typographic book cover (and interior) that matches seamlessly with coach Dr. Mike Palanski’s branding.

The night has something to teach you! This gorgeous workbook is designed for creative night owls to get the most of their time awake, at night.
*Winner (Silver), Nautilus Book Awards 2023*
A breathtaking effort! Book cover designed for Red Thread Publishing (print and ebook) and first time author Leslie Peake. Peake was diagnosed with stage IV colorectal cancer with metastasis in both lungs and her liver.… This is her story.
Proud and excited about the outcome of this beautiful new release. Working with book coach Diane Riis, Maisha Pulliam and her daughter Blaique, together we created this powerful book that supports Maisha’s skincare business, as well as brings the message of self-love and self-care into the world.
Edgy, feminist book cover design for leadership coach and author Nicky Espinosa!
When I met leadership coach Nicky Espinosa, she needed guidance with her book’s subtitle. Once we got that underway and she completed her “homework,” I got to work creating cover mockups as she was finishing up the book writing and editing. Here is the bold final result!

Julie’s book was a joy to work on! Julie hired me for what I call my “Ta-Da!” Book Design package: an ebook and paperback (cover + interior), and helping her get it uploaded to Amazon.
Because the book title was already settled when we met, we were able to dive straight into cover concepts. One of our ideas was a cover with a photo of her laughing on it. This mockup actually turned out so beautifully she had a hard time picking between the mockups I sent her! In the end, the “butt arrows” won :)
An extraordinary honour to help bring Shirley Johnson’s vision to life for this book about a Mother making peace with her son’s cancer.
For anyone interested in the world of surgery. Painstakingly translated into French from English and published in both languages, all proceeds from the sales of this book go to charity.
This niche nonfiction book was written to fill a gap in the market, which is a fantastic way to improve your chances of making money on a book.
John hired me to design the cover of this book after spending 2 years creating and managing a Facebook group devoted to his niche subject. By the time he finished his manuscript, learned how to to format the interior (the content of which will change from year to year), educated himself on the nuances of self-publishing, he already had a group of readers eager to buy his book.
Summer of 2021, I launched this new book: here is the cover! Designing for myself is much different than designing for clients but (importantly) I am thrilled with my own work and I get a lot of compliments on the cover (phew!).
Eating the Earth by sociology professor Dan Brook was translated into multiple languages, including languages that used Chinese, Korean and Thai characters. It was really fun to create the cover for this wonderful book, which is available for free, in multiple languages, on Smashwords.
After much digging, Gaëtan and his wife came up with this compelling concept for his book’s cover, which we then actualized. This book cover design reminded me that the process can be very collaborative! Mindful NEGOtiation recently published through Morgan James Publishing.
This wonderful book written by my client Mitch Cantor, an extraordinary entrepreneur, moved into the #1 position in the Business School Guide category almost immediately upon release. It was a joy to work with Mitch on the cover, interior (for both ebook and paperback), and self-publishing of his book.
Here is a fiction book cover I designed for a semi-utopian novel-in-progress by colleague Jody Aberdeen. The imagery is a montage of: a photo he took in Paris, overlaid with some colour gradients and a unearthly UFO image. He was really incredibly happy with the first round of mockups: SUCCESS!
As a communications/publication designer for the University of British Columbia, I had the opportunity to work with (relatively) big budget projects, including large offset print runs and student focus groups, including for this redesign of the International Student Handbook. The photo we purchased for the cover of this publication redesign was taken by Paul Poole, who was then a staff member at Enrolment Services, UBC! I loved that we could support his freelance photography.
Hired by Canadian composer Hildegard Westerkamp in 2006, I have helped the World Forum for Acoustic Ecology in the role of freelance cover and layout designer since then. The artwork for this volume is by Todd Birdsong.
