Learning from Squirrels: How to Grab Some Attention for your Book

Canadian Lawyer David Freiheit had the idea to combine a GoPro, a piece of bread, and a squirrel.

Today (in the last hour actually), I saw two dead squirrels at the side of the road, which is just weird (since normally I don't see any).

It made me immediately recognize that today is a "frantic squirrel energy” kind of day for me (too much coffee etc.). Without careful management, my energy is all over the place and I am easily distracted.

If you are actually reading these words, it means I've gotten your attention.

Have you ever thought much about attention?

In this busy busy world (where more than 1.4 million books are self-published books every year), if you want to sell your book(s) and/or services, attention is actually an important, expensive, key commodity (and principle) worth considering carefully.

To sell anything, you need to get people's attention. How will you do it?

The title of your book is the headline of the book. Headlines are a significant component of attention getting. I know some people who recommend writing the book title first, and then the book.

“Nothing Happens Until Attention Has Been Gotten”

Here's a great example of a headline from National Geographic: Watch: This Is What Happens When You Give a Squirrel a GoPro

Ha! If that headline grabbed your attention, you may not even finish reading this...

I would argue that for books, it's the combination (and harmony) of the "book title + book cover design" combo will help on the road to getting attention and selling your book.

If you have a book that is still in "working title" stage, feel free to reach out to me for a brand new mini service: Book Titling/Subtitling!

Before cover design begins, your book deserves a good title. It will help it get more attention.

Me and my colleagues will help you mastermind that.
